Name: Katie Wighton
Brief Blurb: "With an incredible vocal performance and distinctive take on melancholy, Katie Wighton exudes grace on her Oh-Dark-Hours EP." Fragile, compelling, and moving, Sydney singer-songwriter Katie Wighton finds truth in the darkness. “That moment just before dawn”, she says, “is so incredible, and I’m strangely attracted to it.” A finalist in the National Jazz Awards in 2012, 27 year-old Wighton relishes her varied musical accomplishments, from being awarded a Contemporary Music Touring Grant from the Australia Arts Council in 2013 that allowed her to play intimate gigs in people's lounge rooms, to joining Kate Miller-Heidke onstage at her critically lauded Vivid Festival performance at the Sydney Opera House in 2014. There, she provided back-up vocals alongside members of her playful, charming all-girl folk/country group All Our Exes Live in Texas, who have enjoyed success touring the country and performing at the National Folk Festival and supporting artists as varied as Megan Washington and the Backstreet Boys. More recently, she joined her mother Sue onstage at the Sydney Writers’ Festival at the popular ‘People Of Letters’, event where the mother-daughter duo explored each other’s strong bond through the art of letter writing and music. Sonically, Wighton knows her way around a beautiful pop hook, layered with piano and vocals. “We really dig Katie Wighton. Lovely and strange chamber pop.” AUSTRALIAN INDEPENDENT RECORD LABEL ASSOCIATION
