Name: The Boxties
Brief Blurb: A Boxty is an Irish potato pancake with a characteristic smooth, fine-grained consistency – a logical namesake for a band of versatile young singers and multi-instrumentalists, delving into the Irish musical tradition and its many relatives and offshoots. The Boxties are all former or current students from the instrumental and vocal music program at Brisbane’s Ferny Grove State High School. During their high-school years, they built strong foundations for their musicianship, playing and singing together in everything from percussion ensembles and choirs to big band and string orchestras. They also discovered the depth and strength of traditional music from the British Isles and elsewhere. Some of them are now following musical careers, others pursuing careers outside music. All of those who have left the school are still involved with the music program in one way or another, tutoring and mentoring those coming after. But the desire to sing together, to build on their mutual musical understanding, still drives them, especially when it involves the kinds of robust and haunting songs that still resonate in the traditional music of the Old World and the New. The Boxties are: Jacob Allchin, Deanna Connelly, Ebony Cundy-Profke, Lochie Dormer, Mitchell Dormer, Bridget Matthews, Mairead Matthews, Shannon Rogers, Annie Silva, Aislinn Ward, Ashreya Ward, Conor Ward, and their Musical Director is Stephanie McCaw.
