Name: Villanova Irish Ensemble
Brief Blurb: The Villanova Irish Ensemble began in 2007, as a response to a World Music unit in classroom music and as recognition of the Irish Augustinian Fathers that established the College in Brisbane in 1948. Since then the group has evolved with each cohort, with past performances including the National Celtic Folk Festival, with the Queensland Pops Orchestra at QPAC, at Catholic Education Week, for the Queensland Irish Association and two back-to back years at the legendary Woodford Folk Festival. Earlier in May this year, the students packed out their performance venues at the Australian Celtic Festival and received standing ovations for their performances. On the Saturday night, the group were awarded the 2015 Wendy Watts ‘Best New Celtic Talent’ award at the Australian Celtic Music Awards. The students produce traditional and contemporary versions of Celtic music, and actively work with their ‘live’ arrangements, giving compositional input and texture of the group. Their youthful enthusiasm and creativity give a unique spin on the music.
